Norman Law
Norman, who was born near Stirling in Scotland, began his playing career on trombone with the Alva Town Band, quickly progressing to Solo Trombone, a position he also held with The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland.
In 1972, he “emigrated” to England to take Solo Trombone with the GUS (Footwear) Band, a position he held with various bands for the next 20 years, including Fodens Motorworks, Brighouse & Rastrick, and finally eight years with Black Dyke Mills Band, winning numerous competitions and visiting many parts of the world, including Europe, Australia and Japan.
During his stint at Dyke, the band enjoyed it’s most successful period, winning the “Grand Slam” in 1985 (Yorkshire Champions, European Champions, BBC Band of the Year, British Open Champions and The National Champions).
From 1990 to 2000, Norman was Musical Director of the Hepworth Band, making two appearances at the National Finals and promotion to the Championship Section in 1999.
In 2000, Norman became MD of the Old Silkstone Band, and they recorded many successes and gained two promotions in five years.
In 2007, Norman became MD of Wakefield Metropolitan Band, leading them in their National Finals appearance and an enjoyable tour of Germany earlier in 2008.
Norman is in regular demand as a guest conductor and adjudicator all over the world, visiting Japan every summer to conduct The Band of the Black Colt in Tokyo.
