Our Bands

Meltham & Meltham Mills Band
Meltham & Meltham Mills Band is an inclusive and welcoming brass band for anyone who shares a passion for making and enjoying great music. We rehearse twice a week in our dedicated bandroom in Meltham, Holmfirth a space we’ve proudly called home since 1958 and which is owned by the band.
Our roots go back over a century, and we’re proud of the strong musical tradition that has shaped our identity. Today, we continue to build on that heritage by competing in the Second Section, taking part in both Regional and National competitions. Alongside contesting, we perform concerts locally and across the region, bringing brass music to audiences of all ages.
Community is at the heart of what we do. We run initiatives such as our Beginners Band, Community Band, and Brass Roots Project in partnership with local schools, helping to inspire and nurture the next generation of players. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or just starting out, there’s a place for you in our organisation.

In 2019, Katy Jones, Principal Trombone of the Hallé Orchestra and Meltham resident, approached us about beginner brass provision. At the time, we had a Junior Band but no starter group. Katy offered to teach at Meltham C of E Primary School, and with the school providing the hall, we sourced and repaired spare instruments. After an assembly and sign-up, over 90 children showed interest, and 20 were selected for weekly lessons led by Katy, supported by our band.
Covid halted progress, but once restrictions lifted, the school brass group restarted from scratch. A highlight each year is attending the Hallé “Come and Play” event, where children perform alongside the orchestra – including Katy herself. The first trip in June 2022 was unforgettable.
Today, the school band is thriving with over 30 young brass players, now led by Rachel Taylor and Paula Spittlehouse, continuing to inspire the next generation of musicians.
