SUMMER CONCERT

Meltham and Meltham Mills Band presented their Annual Summer Concert last Saturday, 24th to a rather disappointing audience.

However the band got off with a rousing rendition of the March ‘ ORB, and this was followed by an excellent Horn solo as Imogen Heywood performed a superb arrangement of Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’

A further outstanding item featured a wonderful arrangement by Leigh Baker of the hymn tune ‘Eventide’ where the band displayed both very sensitive and powerful playing.

The Junior and Training Bands then combined to present a British Isles medley followed by ‘The Rose’, ‘Amarillo’ and finally a most challenging arrangement by Alan Fernie in ‘The Essential Glen Miller’ which proved a rousing close to the first half

‘Slaughter on 10th Avenue’ opened the second part followed by a most neglected solo instrument as Keith Cookson performed his ‘debut solo’ playing ‘None But The Weary Heart’ on Bass Trombone!

Hot Toddy’ went with it’s usual swing leading into a terrific Fernie arrangement of ‘Pinball Wizard’, cracking stuff!

The most musical, sensitive and moving piece of the evening I felt, was Simon Dobson’s ‘Little Hymn’ which was really nicely played by the band, and tha Finale was the extremely exciting ‘Gaelforce’ which brought a most entertaining evening to a close.
