JACK MANCHESTER   1923-2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Manchester, aged 95. Jack had been involved with this, and only this band all his life as a player and committee member, playing whatever instrument was in demand at the time and occupying all the various seats of responsibility on the committee.

Yet to several former players, including myself, he was a highly respected and outstanding teacher with some of us progressing to play in Yorkshire's top Championship section bands, yet after all those years of teaching Jack never charged a single penny!

One of his many qualities was his ability to influence the ‘pleasure’ of practising, most unusual these days, and Jack quietly enjoyed watching his students make progress.

In 2010 he was awarded the Meltham Town Council’s Community Shield in honour of his life-time comittmnent to Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band, richly deserved, and a few years later Jack removed up to South Uist in Scotland to be closer to his family and it was there where he passed away.

The brass band fraternity have lost not only a dedicated life-long bandsman, but a true gentleman and a special friend to many.

The funeral will be held at St. Bartholomew’s C of E church in the centre of Meltham at 11am on Saturday 27th January.

Any ex Meltham and Meltham Mills players who wish to play at Jack’s funeral, please contact us either via the website, Facebook page or direct with band members.
