Last Saturday Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, in conjunction with Meltham Parish Church presented their annual “ Last Night of the Proms” in St. Bartholomews Church to a very large and enthusiastic audience.
Their Guest soloist was a young Melthamer by the name of Ben Glover, and he displayed some mature musicianship as a Baritone singer in quite a wide choice of repertoire from the Classics, the Shows and some G & S -------he is a young man of great potential.
The Band, under M D Norman Law were in fine form, and presented a well chosen and prepared programme which included music by the late Goff Richards, and some very fine playing in two excerpts from Peter Graham’s War of the Worlds.
Gordon Langford’s arrangements in the second half transported all of us down to the Welsh Valleys ( where it seems all the top bands now reside ) with All Through the Night and Men of Harlech.
The highlight of the band’s programme was undoubtedly an medley of songs from Les Miserables, superbly arranged by the band’s repiano cornet player James Burton; he is certainly a name to watch out for!
Ben then joined with band and audience for the traditional Henry Wood Proms Finale to close an excellent evening.
A similar programme can be heard this Saturday ,19th, when the band will present another Proms concert in St. John’s Church, Birkby commencing at 7.15pm
